Taking pictures without a flash - No Flash Photography!

January 7, 2009

camera flash with no symbolSince I’ve learned a thing or two about using my digital SLR camera, it seems like my most favorite thing to teach people is how to take pictures without a flash. Granted, it’s not easy with some cameras, but chances are that if you’ve bought a decent point-and-shoot in the past two years, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Not using a flash has become especially important to me ever since baby Hannah arrived. “Look! Her eyes are open!” *FLASH*

I wrote an article over on GeekInspired.com that tries to explain how shooting without a flash is possible and lists a few benefits of going sans-flash. Check it out if you’ve got a few extra minutes: No Flash Photography.

Do you backup your computer? Try Mozy!

A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine had a hard drive go out on his laptop. That’s a hassle in itself, but the unfortunate thing is that the hard drive contained a collection of family photos that did not exist anywhere else. Unless he can work some magic and somehow restore the pictures from the dead drive, those photos are gone forever!

Gustav putting Katrina’s lesson to the test

August 29, 2008

Well, its looking more and more like Gustav is going to be the real deal. Right now, forecasters are saying Gustav will be a Category 3 hurricane when it makes landfall… in Louisiana.

Gustav has already killed 51 people in Haiti and 8 in the Dominican Republic, and I believe that it has only briefly achieved hurricane status. Right now it’s only a tropical storm but is expected to strengthen considerably once it makes it out into the gulf.

Nice Asphalt

August 12, 2008

As most of you know, we moved into our new house about a year and a half ago. We’ve really enjoyed the new house and the location, but one little thing has persistently annoyed us: the road.

When we began to build the house, there was only a gravel road out front. We assumed that shortly after the house was finished, they’d come out and put down the first layer of asphalt. Boy, were we wrong.

No Ethanol

July 15, 2008

Ethanol Molecular StructureYesterday, there was a pretty bad wreck on I-24 just as you get into Smyrna. I heard about it on the radio just as I was leaving work, so I decided to take a different route home. I ended up going down Murfreesboro Road, which was a huge mistake.

Anyway, I finally made it to Waldron Road, which connects with I-24. I was running low on gas, so I decided to make a stop before hitting the interstate. I stopped at a Quik Pak (on the East side of the interstate) since it seemed like the easiest place to get in and out of.

My New TREK 3700

July 1, 2008

Trek 3700 BicycleI’ve been wanting to get back into the routine of exercising in the mornings, but walking circles around the neighborhood absolutely bores me to death. About a month ago I started looking around at difference bikes and thinking this might be my ticket to get back into better shape.
